The interview was conducted by Alex Cline, senior writer, UCLA Oral History Program; musician. In April of 2009, Jeffrey P. Hayden, then executive director of the Ojai Music Festival, met with staff from the UCLA Library to discuss the possibility of conducting short oral histories with the festival’s past artistic directors. Since the UCLA Center for Oral History Research had already conducted a full-life, multi-session oral history interview with former artistic director Ernest Fleischmann, it was decided that the original interviewer, Alex Cline, would conduct the session with Mr. Fleischmann. The resulting interview, while adding to the life history interview already conducted with Fleischmann, also serves as a contribution to the Ojai Music Festival’s archive documenting its important and illustrious history.
