Mantle Hood's book, The Ethnomusicologist (New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1971), and the card catalogs in the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive were used as authoritative sources for spellings of all non-Western names. Harrell reviewed and approved of the edited transcripts. Richard Candida Smith, principal editor, reviewed the transcript and wrote the introductory biographical summaries.
