Formative years in Kansas; education at Kansas City University and University of Southern California; admission to bar in Oklahoma and Missouri, 1906, and California, 1924; early legal practice; teaching in Los Angeles law schools, 1920s; work with Unitarian Church, Los Angeles City Club, and Los Angeles Municipal League, early 1930s; participation in local politics; election as Los Angeles city councilman; service on Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee, late 1930s; member, Severance Club, serving as vice president, 1925-60, and president, 1960-69; founding Los Angeles Ethical Culture Society, 1944; member, Professional Writers League of Los Angeles; later legal practice linked with specialization as certified psychologist.
