Childhood on the East Coast; the social atmosphere of theoretical physics; Lieberman's social activism; funding in the field of theoretical physics; not conforming to the medical school mold; the atmosphere of the Harvard University-Massachusetts Institute of Techno-logy Health Sciences and Technology Program; attempting to develop an immunotherapy for HIV using cytotoxic T cells; how clinical observation can provide a research focus; investigating why cytotoxic lymphocyte signaling molecules fail to function in cases of HIV infection; the research challenges presented by developments in pharmaceutical treatments for AIDS; the political obstacles to the development of an AIDS vaccine.
