Childhood in Portland, Connecticut; interest in science in high school; participates in Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute research cruise; joins a modern dance company; works as a technician in the Dieter Söll lab at Yale University; equal representation of women in the field of developmental biology; Cooley's lab divides its focus between genes related to the function of ring canals and genes related to the regulation of actin in nurse cells; publishing research results; Cooley's concern about cutbacks in basic science funding; the chickadee and singed genes' role in bristle development; the impact of molecular techniques on developmental biology; the Human Genome Project; need to increase the public's awareness of basic research.
