Abstract:
Growing up in New York City and Los Angeles; stepfather, William Forrest; pursues undergraduate and graduate studies in mathematics at UCLA; research at the UCLA branch of the UCLA Institute for Numerical Analysis, National Bureau of Standards, becomes the basis for Hayes's dissertation; meets and marries Alice Peters; founds Advanced Information Systems Company in 1959; collaborates with Ralph M. Shoffner on The Economics of Book Catalog Production; teaches at UCLA University Extension; research interests focus on retrieval systems; son, Robert Dendrou Hayes; genesis and teaching of the Information Storage Retrieval course; challenges in integrating library methodologies and computer processing technologies; Lawrence Clark Powell; Andrew H. Horn; forming the Institute of Library Research; forms Becker and Hayes, Inc., with Joseph Becker; becomes dean of the School of Library Service in 1975; proposes that the library school offer a master of science in information science; Stafford L.
