The interview was conducted by Ranford B. Hopkins, UCLA Oral History Program; B.A., M.A., history, UC Santa Barbara; Ph.D. candidate, history, UC Santa Barbara; current research entitled "Leadership and the Growth of the Afro-American Community in Los Angeles, 1900-1965."Hopkins prepared for the interview by researching memorabilia from the UCLA alumni office, reading articles published by LuValle, and by reading issues of the Daily Bruin during the years of LuValle's attendance at UCLA. In order to gain further background information, Hopkins also interviewed LuValle's sister, Mayme LuValle McWhorter. Drawing from his own research on the history of the Afro-American community in Los Angeles, Hopkins approached the interview with two goals in mind: to cover the main events in LuValle's personal life and career, and then to place these events in the larger context of the black experience during those years.

Barbara Marston, Gold Shield oral history intern, edited the interview. She checked the verbatim transcript of the interview against the original tape recordings, edited for punctuation, paragraphing, and spelling, and verified proper names. Words and phrases inserted by the editor have been bracketed. LuValle reviewed and approved the edited transcript. He made some corrections. Marston prepared the table of contents.
