Interviewer Background and Preparation:
The interview was conducted by Steven Edgington, researcher/editor, California State University, Fullerton, Oral History Program; B.A., M.A., Social Sciences, CSUF. Edgington prepared for the interview by reading articles from the California Journal (1970-1974), Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Sacramento Bee. Help in assembling a chronology of events was provided by weekly issues of the Sacramento Newsletter. In addition to the standard political biographies available in the Blue Book of the State of California (1971, 1975), other documents consulted were the Office of Criminal Justice Planning Bulletin, the Crime-Specific Burglary Prevention Handbook, and the California Council on Criminal Justice Bulletin and other council publications.
Processing of Interview:
Editing was done by Bernard Galm, senior editor, Oral History Program. He checked the verbatim typed transcript against the original tape recordings and edited for punctuation, paragraphing, correct spelling, and verification of proper and place names. Words and phrases inserted by the editor have been bracketed. Younger reviewed and approved the edited transcript. He made minor corrections and few additions. He supplied spellings of names not previously verified and clarified sections that were inaudible or unclear in meaning. Mitch Tuchman, acting director. Oral History Program, reviewed the edited transcript before it was typed in final form. Edgington wrote the introduction. Galm prepared the front matter and the index.
